Tigranes II<\/strong>, more commonly known as\u00a0Tigranes the <\/strong>was a king of\u00a0Armenia<\/a>. He ruled from 95 BC to 55 BC. Under his reign, the Armenian kingdom expanded beyond its traditional boundaries and reached its peak, allowing Tigranes to claim the title\u00a0Great King<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0King of Kings<\/a>. His empire for a short time was the most powerful state to the east of the\u00a0Roman Republic<\/a>.<\/p>\n

At its height, Tigranes’ empire stretched from the\u00a0Pontic Alps<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0Mesopotamia<\/a>\u00a0and from the\u00a0Caspian Sea<\/a>\u00a0to the Mediterranean.<\/p>\n

The phrase “sea to sea Armenia, is a popular expression used by Armenians to refer to the kingdom of Tigranes which extended from the\u00a0Caspian Sea<\/a>\u00a0to the\u00a0Mediterranean Sea<\/a>.<\/p>\n

During the reign of Tigran the Great, the sphere of circulation of Armenian drams expanded. His silver drachms (one drachm) and tetradrachms (four drachms) were widespread. Tigran coins have reached us with Greek titles and inscriptions.<\/p>\n
