Soghomon Soghomonian<\/strong> commonly known as\u00a0Komitas<\/strong>,\u00a0was born on 26 september, 1869\u00a0 and died on 22 October 1935. He was an\u00a0Armenian<\/a>\u00a0priest,\u00a0musicologist<\/a>, composer, arranger, singer, and\u00a0choirmaster<\/a>, who is considered the founder of the\u00a0Armenian national school of music<\/a>. He is recognized as one of the pioneers of\u00a0ethnomusicology<\/a>.<\/p>\n Orphaned at a young age, Komitas was taken to\u00a0Etchmiadzin<\/a>, Armenia’s religious center, where he received education at the\u00a0Gevorgian Seminary<\/a>. Following his ordination as\u00a0vardapet<\/a>\u00a0(celibate priest) in 1895, he studied music at the\u00a0Frederick William University<\/a>\u00a0in Berlin.<\/p>\n He collected and transcribed over 3,000 pieces of Armenian folk music, more than half of which were subsequently lost and only around 1,200 are now extant.During the\u00a0Armenian genocide<\/a>, in April 1915, along with 100 of other Armenian intellectuals, Komitas was\u00a0arrested and deported<\/a>\u00a0to a\u00a0prison camp<\/a> by the Ottoman government. He was soon released under unclear circumstances and, having witnessed indiscriminate cruelty and relentless massacres of other Armenians by the Ottoman Turks, Komitas experienced a mental breakdown and\u00a0 developed a severe case of\u00a0post-traumatic stress disorder<\/a>\u00a0(PTSD). He was first placed in a Turkish military-operated hospital until 1919 and then transferred to\u00a0psychiatric hospitals<\/a>\u00a0in Paris, where he spent the last years of his life in agony.<\/p>\n On January 29, 2015, the opening of the Komitas Museum-Institute took place in the park named after Komitas in Yerevan. At the end of June of the same year, thanks to the “Renaissance” cultural and intellectual foundation, Komitas Vardapet\u2019s plan was realized.
