The Cascade complex is an architectural monument located in the capital Yerevan. Inside the monument there are exhibition halls, fountains and sculptures. In front of the complex, there is a statue of the great architect Alexander Tamanyan, and above – a monument dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the October Revolution. Number of stairs of the Cascade complex is 572, the height – is 302 meters, the width – is 50 meters. The author of the idea of the cascade is Alexander Tamanyan. He wanted to connect the north and central parts of the city to each other. The project was realized in 1976 by the chief architect of Yerevan Jim Torosyan. The complex is built of travertine white stone. In fact, the main idea was to present the national renaissance, decorated with ornaments concerning the Armenian history and cultural motivs. The construction of the Cascade complex was stopped by the reason in 1988 earthquake in Armenia, by the reason in 1991 the collapse of the Soviet Union.
In 2002, american-armenian businessman, benefactor Gerard L. Cafesjian initiated the reconstruction of the Cascade complex. The memorial was completely renovated by Cafesjian and became an art center.
