Saint Gregory the Illuminator Mother Cathedral is the main church of Yerevan.
It was built in 1996-2001, the architect is Stepan Kyurkchyan. The construction’s author was the His Holiness Vazgen A. Palchyan Catholicos of All Armenians. On July 14, 1989, at the session of the Supreme Spiritual Council, it was decided: “… to build a magnificent church in the capital Yerevan based on the classical armenian architectural style, where about two thousand five hundred believers will be able to pray together.” In 1990, the municipality of Yerevan allocated 1.5 hectares of land in the Ring Park, near Yervand Kochar street, for the construction of the Mother Church.
On March 31, 1990, with the blessing of Catholicos Vazgen I, a monument was erected at the construction site of the Mother Church.
Preliminary works of the construction began on february 29, 1996 and on september 23, 2001, , His Holiness Garegin II Nersisyan Catholicos of All Armenians consecrated the church and celebrated a Divine Liturgy.
St. Gregory the Illuminator Mother Cathedral is a complex of different structures- a church, a bell tower, St. Trdat and St. Ashkhen chapels. The church is covered with the same stone as the Ani mother cathedral.
In 2000, His Holiness Garegin II Nersisyan Catholicos of All Armenians brought the relics of Gregory I the Illuminator from the church St. Gregory in Naples. Now, the relics are kept in the SAINT the Illuminator mother cathedral.
