According to the tradition, the Sevanavank Monastery has long served as a place of exile for guilty clergy, who were deported by the Catholicos. The name of the Monastery – Sevan, means ‘black’. Another version linked to the Monastery’s name is that Sevan name was taken, because it was built of black stone- tuff.
