Republic Square is the main architectural complex in the capital Yerevan. It was created according to the Yerevan master plan. It was designed in 1924 by architect Alexander Tamanyan, and construction began in 1926 with the construction of the Government Building. All buildings are built and lined with tuff of white and pink tones.
Most of the structures were completed in 1950, and the last building, the National Gallery, was completed in 1977.
During the Soviet Union period, the square was named “Lenin” in honor of the Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin. The statue of Lenin was installed in the square in 1940 and removed in 1991. After Armenia’s independence it was named Republic Square.
