From 1918, Yerevan became the capital of the first republic of Armenia. In 1920-1991, Yerevan was already the capital of the Armenian SSR, and from 1991, Yerevan has been the capital of the Republic of Armenia. The people of Yerevan often call the city a “pink city”, because many buildings in the city are made of “pink Armenian stone-named tuff”.
The name of Yerevan comes from the urartian times, from Erebuni. It is known, that the Urartian sound “B” is “V” in Armenian. From here, the name of Erebuni was changed to Yerevan.
According, to another legend, it is said, when after the flood Noah’s ark stopped on the top of Ararat, Noah saw the first land, which was the construction site of the future Yerevan, he shouted: “Yerevats!” that’s why, the name is “Yerevan”.
