National poet of ARMENIA, novelist, literary, national and public figure Hovhannes Tumanyan was born on February 19, 1869 in the village of Lorva Dsegh and died in 1923.
He wrote poems, quatrains, ballads, short stories, fairy tales, reviews, critical and journalistic articles, made translations, developed the “Sasuntsi David” branch of the epic “Sasna Tsrer”.
In 1877-1879, Tumanyan studied at Dsegh’s school.
In 1879-1883 – in Jalaloglu, now Stepanavan’s school.
In 1887 in Tiflis – Nersisian School, but due to the difficult financial situation, in 1887 he left his studies halfway and worked in the Armenian Church Court of Tiflis, and then in the office of the Armenian Publishing Union.
In 1899, on his initiative, the “Vernatun” literary group was created in Tiflis, whose members were famous Armenian writters: Hovhannes Tumanyan, Derenik Demirchyan, Levon Shant, Ghazaros Aghayan, Avetik Isahakyan, Nikol Aghbalyan and others.
Tumanyan’s works became popular, were published with illustrations by various artists, and turned into songs, cartoons and films. Based on his works, Armen Tigranyan wrote the operas “Anoush” (based on the poem of the same name), Alexander Spendiaryan wrote the operas “Almast” (based on the poem “Tmkaberd’s Arum”).
