According to the legend, a little church was already functioning here, the first Armenian Catholicos Gregory the Illuminator, noticing this place from the top of Aragats in the 4th century, came here and built a church. Then he gathered priests here and taught them psalms.
A psalm is a spiritual song, in Armenian we say “saghmos” and the church is named Saghmosavank, because it is the only monastery in the world that was named Psalms; the monastery has wonderful acoustics.
It is said, that the main structures of the monastery – St. Sion church was erected in 1215 by prince Vache Vachutyan and his wife Mamakhatun.
