The Yerevan Zoo was founded in 1940, on a 3-hectare area, by the decision of the Supreme Council of the USSR. First, there were only 2 dozen animals and birds in the zoo, which were acquired at the 12th state zoological exhibition held in Yerevan.
In 1954, there were 4 sections in the zoo: birds, ungulates, predators and aquaterrarium.
At present the zoo is home to about 3000 individuals representing 300 species: hyena, bezoar goat, wild pigs, mountain partridges, predators, crocodiles, reptiles, fish. 34 of the protected species of animals are registered in the International Nature Conservation, and 50 in the Red Books of the Republic of Armenia.
